Western Pleasure Sleigh Ride

A recent snowy Saturday morning found us snuggled together under blankets in a horse-drawn sleigh. We were coasting through the peaceful woodland of Western Pleasure Guest Ranch. Pulling the three-seat sleigh were two mighty Percheron horses, Amos and Kate. Harness bells rang out through the crisp winter air as the horses touched noses, tossed their heads, and begin their sure-footed trot at the command of the skilled driver, Brad. On a winding trail we sped, cresting over hills and passing by meadows. Trees laden with snow stood sentinel and were our only witnesses to this wonderful excursion.
With the exception of the harness bells, the squeak of the snow under-foot, and the occasional command from the sleigh driver, it was quiet and still throughout. It was as if we were transported to another time and another place, and all our cares and worries were left behind, if only for a half-hour. When the horses returned us to our starting point, we disembarked and headed for the lodge. There we sipped hot drinks and munched fresh popcorn as we warmed ourselves by the fire. As we bundled up for the trek home in our own “horse power” vehicle, we agreed that a sleigh ride at Western Pleasure Guest Ranch would be an annual tradition for our family.
Western Pleasure Guest Ranch is located about a half-hour from Sandpoint. Follow Highway 200 east out of town. Turn left onto Colburn Culver road. Turn right onto Gold Creek road. Take another right onto Upper Gold Creek road, then a left at the entrance to the ranch. Take a right at the fork in the road, and follow the signs to the large parking area and lodge. Check in at the lodge. Cost is $15.00 per person, with a $60.00 minimum. (Hint: if you’re looking to keep costs low, take a larger group so that you don’t have to meet the minimum yourself.).
The Ranch provides blankets for the sleigh ride, but you are welcome to bring your own, too. Be sure to bundle up for cold temperatures, and don’t forget your camera! When the ride is over, return to the lodge to warm yourself by the fire and enjoy the complimentary hot treats. Restroom facilities are located in the lodge.
