Yokes Outrageous Air Show Each year Yoke’s grocery stores and Schweitzer team up to bring the Outrageous Air Show to Sandpoint for Friday and Saturday night shows one weekend a year, usually at the end of February. The events start around 6pm in the village of Schweitzer Mountain Resort. The torch light parade starts the night with skiers, skiing from the top of the mountain down to the village with red glowing torches.

Next is the air show which includes several local talents and other jumpers from around the area preforming back flips, 360’s, 720’s and anything else they can think of while they sail off the huge snow covered jump. As the night progresses the jumps become more intense and a fire hoop is brought out for the grand finally along with fireworks.

For anyone looking to continue the fun after the 45 minute show is over, Friday night at TAPS there was a Bacardi Gras party, a take on the Mardi Gras celebrations and on Saturday night a 80’s costume party.

Weather and wind factor in a lot to the show and unfortunately the weather did not corporate the night we went. The jumpers had to wait several times for the wind to die down and there were a few moments of heavy snow that slowed the show down. A few recommendations for this activity is to show up early as parking can be tricky. Night skiing was going on so we had to park in a lower parking lot and hike up to the lodge because the upper lots were full. Also due to night skiing, finding the perfect spot to view the show is vital as the jump is located near the Midway run which is designated for night skiing. Several skier and boarders were dodging show onlookers during the event and as the show came to an end. You should also dress warm, it is still February / early March and you are at 4700 feet, snow boots are a must! There is no admission charge or parking fee so it makes for a fun, inexpensive night.

Directions: Take US hwy 95 to Schweitzer Cut-Off Road, turning left at the light (Wal-Mart will be on your right). Turn right at the T intersection on N. Boyer and go about a ½ mile where you will see the Schweitzer sign, turn left and follow the road about nine miles where you will reach the parking lot. Additional parking is available in the lower lots which are located on the right where the road forks to take you to the main parking lot. The show takes place on the Lower Stiles run

  1. My husband and I went to this. It was a lot of fun. I agree, though…get there early to get a good parking spot, AND be prepared for winter weather. It snowed heavily and I didn’t have a hat or gloves. But the torchlight parade was pretty awesome to watch through the blizzard!
